Rosario, also known as Rosario Oriental, Villa del Rosario, or Rosario del Colla, is a small city in southern Uruguay. It is located in the Colonia Department. About 10,000 people call Rosario home.

Exploring Rosario's Location
Rosario is found at the southern end of Route 2. It is about 2 kilometers north of where Route 2 meets Route 1. The city is about 14 kilometers west of Nueva Helvecia. It is also about 51 kilometers east-northeast of Colonia del Sacramento. Colonia del Sacramento is the capital city of the department.
Rivers and Streams in Rosario
The Arroyo Colla is a stream that flows along the northern and northeastern edges of the city. On the southeast side of Rosario, this stream flows into the Río Rosario. A stream is a small, narrow river.
A Look at Rosario's Past
The city of Rosario was started on January 24, 1775. It was founded by a person named Benito Herosa. This area became well-known because of several battles fought here. These battles happened in 1811 during the fight for Uruguay's independence from Spain.
Rosario's First Inhabitants
The very first person believed to have lived in Rosario was Pascual de Chena. He was an Indigenous person from the Colla group. Today, a town square and a small stream are named after him. One of the city's other names, Rosario del Colla, also honors him.
How Rosario Became a City
Even before Uruguay became an independent country, Rosario was given the status of a "Villa." A Villa is like a town. Later, on August 17, 1920, Rosario became a "City." This change happened because of a special law called Ley Nº 7.257.
Rosario's Population Over Time
In 2011, Rosario had a population of 10,085 people. The number of people living in Rosario has changed over the years. For example, in 1908, there were 10,682 people. In 1963, the population was 7,705. By 2004, it was 9,311. The 2011 count included people from a nearby small village called Pastoreo.
