The Story of Rosario
Robert Moran's Dream Home
Robert Moran decided to move to Orcas Island because he needed a quieter life due to his health. Between 1906 and 1909, he built his amazing estate, which included a large mansion and other buildings. He used natural materials like wood and stone that he found right on the island.
A Gift to Washington State
In 1921, Robert Moran made a very generous gift. He gave a large part of his property to the state of Washington. This land was then used to create Moran State Park, a popular place for outdoor activities.
Rosario Today
Even after giving land for the park, the main mansion and its surrounding grounds stayed in private hands. This area is now known as the Rosario Resort and Spa. The mansion itself has a museum dedicated to Robert Moran. You can see many of his original belongings there.
The mansion also has a special music room. It features a very old and impressive pipe organ from 1913 and a beautiful grand piano from 1900. These instruments are still played for visitors, bringing the history of the mansion to life through music.
Rosario is recognized as an important historical site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
