Rose Hill is a special area located in the southeast part of Garland, Texas, in the United States. It used to be its own small community, not officially part of a city, in Dallas County. But in 1970, Garland officially took it over, which is called "annexing" it.
Discovering Rose Hill
Rose Hill is a neighborhood within the city of Garland today. It's a place with its own unique history. When a city "annexes" an area, it means that area becomes a part of the city. This helps with things like city services and planning.
A Look Back in Time
The story of Rose Hill began a long time ago, in 1853. This was when the first people started to settle there. Important early settlers like John Little, W.S. Peques, and J.W. Smith received special land grants. These grants allowed them to own and develop the land.
In 1931, the community officially got its name, Rose Hill. There are two ideas about how it got this name. Some say it was named after an early settler named P.W. Rose. Others believe it was named for the beautiful roses that grew near the local churchyard.
Life in Early Rose Hill
Life in Rose Hill was simple but busy. In 1904, about 117 people lived there. By 1910, the population had become smaller, with only 50 residents.
Despite its size, Rose Hill had many important places. It had its own post office from 1884 to 1906. There were also four stores where people could buy supplies. The community had two churches and a school for children. For food, there was a restaurant. A blacksmith helped with metalwork and repairs. About twenty homes made up the residential area.
The number of people living in Rose Hill grew again over time. By 1964, the population reached 175. This was the last time the population was counted before Garland annexed the area six years later.
