Rose Law Firm is a well-known American law firm located in Little Rock, Arkansas. It is one of the oldest law firms in the United States.

The firm started on November 1, 1820, which was 16 years before Arkansas became a state. It was founded by Robert Crittenden and Chester Ashley. This makes it the third oldest law firm in the country and the oldest one west of the Mississippi River. It is also the oldest company of any kind in Arkansas.

In 2018, the firm chose its first female leader. In 2020, Rose Law Firm celebrated its 200th birthday!

History of Rose Law Firm

How It Started: 1820–1865

Rose Law Firm began with a partnership between Robert Crittenden and Chester Ashley in 1820. Their original agreement is still kept in the firm's boardroom today.

Robert Crittenden was an important figure in Arkansas history. He served as Arkansas's governor when it was still a territory. He also helped Arkansas become the 25th state in the United States in 1836. Chester Ashley later became a United States Senator for Arkansas.

Over the years, the firm had different partners. For example, Chester Ashley worked with a lawyer named Watkins for several years. Other lawyers joined and left, but the firm continued to grow.

The Rose Family Years: 1865–1905

The name "Rose" became part of the firm in 1865. This happened when U. M. Rose joined in a partnership with George Claiborne Watkins.

In 1881, the firm's name changed to U.M. Rose and Geo. B. Rose, as George was Uriah's son. Later, in 1893, W.E. Hemingway joined, and the firm became Rose, Hemingway & Rose. In 1905, it merged with another firm, Cantrell and Loughborough.

Many members of Rose Law Firm have been involved in politics and community work. U.M. Rose helped start the American Bar Association, which is a group for lawyers. He was its president from 1901 to 1902. He also helped create important international agreements called the Hague Conventions.

Six members of the firm have served on the Arkansas Supreme Court, with three of them becoming the Chief Justice. Six members have also been president of the Arkansas Bar Association.

Modern Times: 1905–Present

By the late 1970s, the firm had a very long name. In 1980, they decided to simplify it to just "Rose Law Firm."

Rose Law Firm is known for working with many important companies in Arkansas. Some of their clients have included Tyson Foods, Wal-Mart, and large banks.

Hillary Rodham (who later became Hillary Rodham Clinton) was the first female lawyer to work at the firm. She soon became the first female partner. Other partners from the firm, like Webster Hubbell, Vince Foster, and William H. Kennedy, III, later worked in the White House when Bill Clinton was president. The firm grew a lot during this time, becoming five times larger between the early 1970s and early 1990s.

In the 1990s, Rose Law Firm was mentioned in the news during the Whitewater controversy. This was a time when people looked into how much work Hillary Clinton had done for the firm. They wanted to understand her work for a client named Jim McDougal.

The firm's main office in Little Rock has two parts: an older brick building and a newer building connected to it. In 2017, Rose Law Firm opened a second office in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This happened when lawyers from the Henry Law Firm, who focused on intellectual property law, joined Rose Law Firm.
