The Story of Rose Law Firm
How It All Began (1820–1865)
The Rose Law Firm began with a partnership between Robert Crittenden and Chester Ashley in 1820. Their original agreement, written by hand, is still kept at the firm today.
Robert Crittenden was a governor for the Arkansas territory. He helped Arkansas become the 25th state in 1836. Chester Ashley later became a United States Senator for Arkansas.
After their partnership ended, Ashley worked with another lawyer named George Claiborne Watkins. Watkins was also the Arkansas Attorney General from 1848 to 1851. He also served as the Chief Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court from 1853 to 1854.
The Rose Family Years (1865–1905)
The firm's name changed many times over the years. The first Rose family member joined in 1865. This was U. M. Rose, who partnered with George Claiborne Watkins.
In 1881, the firm became "U.M. Rose and Geo. B. Rose." George was Uriah's son. Later, in 1893, W.E. Hemingway joined, and the firm was called "Rose, Hemingway & Rose." In 1905, they joined with another firm, Cantrell and Loughborough.
Lawyers from the Rose Law Firm have always been involved in politics and community work. U.M. Rose helped start the American Bar Association. He was its president from 1901 to 1902. He also helped write important international agreements called the Hague Convention.
Many firm members have served on the Arkansas Supreme Court. Six members have also been president of the Arkansas Bar Association.
Modern Times (1905–Present)
By the late 1970s, the firm had a very long name. In 1980, they decided to simplify it to just "Rose Law Firm."
The firm is known as a very important law firm in Arkansas. It has worked with big companies like Tyson Foods, Wal-Mart, and Worthen Bank.
Hillary Rodham was the first female lawyer to join the firm. She later became its first female partner. This was when her husband, Bill Clinton, was the Governor of Arkansas. Other partners from the firm also went on to work in the Clinton administration.
The firm grew a lot between the 1970s and early 1990s. It became five times bigger!
The Rose Law Firm's main building in Little Rock has two parts. There is an old red brick building that used to be a YMCA. It has wooden floors and even an indoor swimming pool. A newer building is connected to it. In 2017, the firm opened a second office in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This happened when they welcomed lawyers from the Henry Law Firm, who specialized in intellectual property law.
