About Rose Wylie's Art and Life

Rose Wylie was born in Hythe, Kent, on October 14, 1934. She studied art at the Dover School of Art from 1952 to 1956. Later, she earned a master's degree from the Royal College of Art in 1981.

She lives and works in her home in Kent. Rose Wylie creates huge paintings on canvas that is not stretched or prepared. Her art has a loose and natural look. She often paints from her memory. Her ideas come from things she sees in the news or popular culture.

Rose Wylie has won many important awards for her art. In 2009, she was a finalist for the Threadneedle Prize. She also won the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Prize for Visual Arts in 2011.

In 2010, she was the only artist from outside America in the Women to Watch exhibition. This show was held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. In 2012, her art was shown in a special exhibition at Jerwood Gallery in Hastings. The next year, Tate Britain in London showed her newer works.

This award is for the "most distinguished work" at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Her paintings are part of many art collections. These include Tate Britain and the Arts Council Collection. She has also had solo art shows in Germany and Ireland.

Rose Wylie's Personal Life

Rose Wylie was married to Roy Oxlade, who was also a painter. For a time, Rose stopped painting to focus on raising her family.

Money was sometimes tight for her family. They found creative ways to manage. They offered informal painting classes at their house. Students could even camp in their garden. Rose Wylie once said that her children's friends asked why she always wore the same clothes. She replied that she prefers to use what she has. She called herself a "radical non-consumer."

Early Modeling Career

When Rose Wylie was 21, she was painted by Anthony Devas. This painting was for an advertisement for Aero chocolate. She was studying art in Folkestone and Dover at the time. She described herself as a "rebellious art student." She said her look was more like Brigitte Bardot than a typical model. The painting was called Alice in the ad, not by her real name.

When she was younger, Rose often modeled for the artist John Ward. Anthony Devas was staying with John Ward when he painted Rose for the Aero ad. She knew the painting would be in Rowntree's Aero adverts. By 1956, it had already appeared in big newspapers like the Daily Express.
