The Rosemount Museum (pronounced "Rosemont") is a really cool historic house museum in Pueblo, Colorado. It sits on a whole city block in one of the highest spots in north Pueblo. Right across the street is the Parkview Medical Center.
This amazing building is a huge, three-story mansion with an attic and a basement. It has thirty-seven rooms and covers about 24,000 square feet! John A. Thatcher and his family started building it in 1891, and it was finished in 1893. There's also a large 6,000-square-foot carriage house on the property, which was used for carriages and horses.
A Look Back in Time
John Thatcher moved from Pennsylvania to Colorado. He became very successful in the dry goods business, which sold things like fabric and clothing. Later, he also got into banking, mining, and raising cattle.
In 1866, John married Margaret Ann Henry. They built their grand mansion using pink Rhyolite volcanic rock for the outside walls. Inside, you can see many different kinds of wood, like cherry, mahogany, maple, and oak. The Thatcher family lived in this mansion for many decades. John Thatcher passed away in 1913. His last living child, Raymond C. Thatcher, died in 1968.
After Raymond's death, the mansion was given to the city of Pueblo. The city then gave the property to the Metropolitan Museum Association. In 1969, the Thatcher family set up a special fund to turn the mansion into a nonprofit house museum for everyone to enjoy.
Rosemount was one of the first places in Pueblo County to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very important historical site. It was added on July 30, 1974, along with the Goodnight Barn.
What You Can See Inside
When you visit the Rosemount Museum, you'll see that the house and most of its furniture are still just as they were when the Thatcher family lived there. It's like stepping back in time!
On the third floor, there's a special collection of items from Andrew McClelland. He was a very rich business magnate and knew the Thatcher family. McClelland collected these artifacts during his travels all around the world. One of the most interesting items in his collection is an Egyptian mummy!
