What is the History of the Rosenberg Building?
The story of the Rosenberg Brothers Department Store began with Jacob Rosenberg. He was a merchant who rented a store at this important corner spot in 1896. The land belonged to the Tift family, who were the founders of Albany.
When Was the Store Built?
Jacob Rosenberg decided to build a brand new department store on the site. Construction started in 1923, and the building was finished in 1924. It was designed in a style called Second Renaissance Revival architecture. This store was a big part of Albany for many years.
When Did the Store Close?
The Rosenberg Brothers Department Store stayed in business at this location until 1978. Before that, in 1976, a second Rosenberg's store had opened inside the new Albany Mall. This new mall location eventually took over.
What Happened to the Building After the Store Closed?
In 1985, a company called Gray Communications bought the old department store building. They fixed it up and used it as the home for Albany Herald newspaper. The newspaper stayed there for more than 30 years.
Who Owns the Building Now?
In 2019, the building and some other nearby buildings were sold to the city of Albany. The city paid $850,000 for them. The Albany Herald newspaper moved out of the building in December 2019. This building is an important part of Albany's history.
