The Roswell Moore II House is a very old and special home located at 1166 Andrews Street in Southington, Connecticut. It was built around 1787, which means it's over 230 years old! This house is one of the few buildings from the 1700s that are still standing in Southington. It's a great example of a building style called Georgian architecture. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

The Roswell Moore II House

This historic house sits in a quiet, country-like area in the northeast part of Southington. It's on the west side of Andrews Street and looks out over the Wassell Reservoir. Imagine living in a house with such a nice view!

What Does the House Look Like?

The Roswell Moore II House is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, like a typical house. In the middle of the house, there's a large chimney. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.

The house sits on a strong foundation made of brownstone, which is a type of stone cut into smooth blocks. The front of the house has five windows and a door in the center. Above the front door, there's a half-round window that looks like a fan. A small, pointed roof, added later, covers the entrance.

Inside, the house still has many of its original features. You can see beautiful carved wood panels and old fireplaces. The front staircase winds its way up, just as it did hundreds of years ago. A unique thing about this house is its chimney, which is mostly made of brownstone instead of the usual brick.

Who Lived in the House?

The house was built by a man named Roswell Moore II. His father was one of the first people to settle in Southington. Roswell Moore II likely built this house soon after he got married in 1787.

The house stayed in the Moore family for three generations, meaning Roswell Moore II, his children, and his grandchildren lived there. Roswell's son, Sheldon Moore, was very important in starting the cement industry in Southington. This shows how the family played a part in the town's history.
