A Look at the Factory's History
How Cigar Making Started in Sarasota
Making cigars in Sarasota began in 1911. The first company to do this was called Sarasota Cigar Company. Just two years later, in 1913, another cigar company started up. This new company was the Roth Cigar Factory.
The Roth Brothers and Their Business
The Roth Cigar Factory was owned and run by two brothers. Their names were Edward and Michael Roth. They first started making cigars at a factory and newsstand. This first location was at 220 Main Street.
Building the New Factory
In 1920, Edward Roth bought some land. He wanted to build a bigger, separate cigar factory. The construction of this new building began in 1922. It was finished the next year, in 1923.
Interestingly, other important buildings were also finished around the same time. These included the Mira Mar Apartments, now known as the DeMarcay Hotel, and the Mira Mar Hotel. All these buildings, including the Roth Cigar Factory, were designed by the same person, an architect named Thomas Reed Martin.
How the Factory Operated
Once the cigars were made at the factory, they were sold. The main store where people could buy them was nearby. It was located at 214 Main Street. The Roth Cigar Factory building was used for making cigars until 1938. After that, the company moved its operations. They relocated to Pineapple Avenue, which was also nearby.
Becoming a Historic Place
On March 22, 1984, the Roth Cigar Factory was recognized as a special historical site. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This listing helps to protect and preserve important buildings like the factory for future generations.
