- Rothesay Primary School
- St. Andrew's Primary School (both in Rothesay)
- North Bute Primary School in Port Bannatyne
A Look at Rothesay Academy's History
Rothesay Academy has a long and interesting history, going back over 150 years!
How the School Started
The school first opened its doors in 1870. Before that, there were smaller schools like Croft Lodge and a church school. Rothesay Academy brought them together to create a larger, more organized place for learning.
Buildings Through the Years
The very first building was a grand Victorian style, built overlooking Rothesay Bay. It was updated and made bigger in 1910 and again in 1938 to fit more students and modern needs.
Sadly, this original building was destroyed by fire in 1954. A new, modern building was then built in its place, opening in 1959.
The Current Campus
The school you see today at Townhead is quite new! It opened in 2007. This building is part of a special "joint campus" site. This means it shares its location with Rothesay Primary School and Argyll College. This type of shared campus was a popular idea for new schools built across the west of Scotland between 2005 and 2009.
