Roy Apps: A Creative Writer for Kids

Roy Apps has made a huge impact on children's entertainment. In 2001, he received a special BAFTA award. This award was for his amazing contributions to children's movies and TV shows. A BAFTA is one of the most important awards in the British film and television industry.

Writing for Television

For ten years, Roy Apps wrote for a very popular TV show called Byker Grove. This show was on CBBC, a children's channel. His first big task on Byker Grove was to write out two main characters. These characters, "PJ and Duncan," were played by the famous duo Ant and Dec.

Roy Apps also helped create and write another award-winning series. This show was called The Ghost Hunter. He has also written for many other TV shows. These include Chucklevision, Barmy Aunt Boomerang, Stacey Stone, and Casper's Scare School. In 2019, a comedy he wrote, Dr Bodkin's Needle, was shown on BBC 1. It starred a well-known actress, Celia Imrie.

Roy Apps is a very busy author. He has written 98 books for children! One of his novels, The Secret Summer of Daniel Lyons, won an important award in 1991. It won the Writers’ Guild Children's Book Award. It was also a finalist for the Whitbread Awards, another major book prize.

Radio Plays and Stories

Roy Apps has written over one hundred scripts for BBC radio. Two of his radio plays won Sony Awards. These awards are very important for radio productions. The winning plays were Hopping Down in Kent and a story based on Raymond Briggs' Fungus the Bogeyman.

More recently, he wrote The Saving of Albert Perks for actor Bernard Cribbins. He also wrote a five-part series called Miss Bessemer Saves the Train. This series starred Dame Penelope Keith. Both of these radio shows were made for BBC Radio 4.
