Roy Boney Jr. (whose Cherokee name is ᎧᏂᎦ ᎪᎳᎭ) was born on December 1, 1978. He is a talented artist from Locust Grove, Oklahoma. Roy is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a member of the Deer Clan. He is known for his amazing comic art, beautiful paintings, and computer animation. He also works hard to keep the Cherokee language alive. On August 29, 2024, Roy Boney Jr. was honored as a Cherokee National Treasure. This is a special award for people who help preserve Cherokee culture.

About Roy Boney Jr.

Roy Boney Jr. grew up speaking the Cherokee language. He went to Oklahoma State University and earned a degree in Graphic Design. Later, he received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. While there, he was part of the Sequoyah Research Center team. He also received a special scholarship called the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Fellowship.

Working with the Cherokee Language

Roy Boney Jr. is very dedicated to the Cherokee language. He currently manages the Cherokee Nation's language program. Before this, he worked as a language media specialist for the Cherokee Nation. His work helps to teach and preserve the Cherokee language for future generations.

Roy's Art and Creations

Comics and Fine Art

Roy Boney Jr. is a talented artist who creates many different kinds of art. With Matthew Shepherd, he created a comic book series called Dead Eyes Open. This series was published by Slave Labor Graphics.

After working in comics, Roy started creating fine art drawings and paintings. His first art show was in 2006. At this show, he won the Grand Prize at the Cherokee Heritage Center's Trail of Tears art show. His art was also included in a traveling exhibit called Frybread and Roses: The Art of Native American Labor. Some of Roy's paintings are now part of the permanent collection at the Sequoyah National Research Center.

Animation and Technology

Roy Boney Jr. has also worked in media arts, especially animation. He teamed up with Joseph L. Erb at the American Indian Resource Center, Inc. Together, they taught animation to children from the Muscogee Creek and Cherokee communities. Their animated films, which use Native languages, have won many awards.

Erb and Boney also developed an iPhone app for sending text messages in the Cherokee language. They are also working on creating a Cherokee language social network and video games. These projects help make the Cherokee language more accessible and fun for people to use every day.

Roy Boney Jr. also shares his thoughts and knowledge through writing. He regularly writes for Indian Country Today Media Network. He also contributes articles to First American Art Magazine.
