Royal's Community History

Royal, Illinois, is a small village known for its grain elevators, which are tall buildings used to store grain. These elevators are located where a railroad crosses County Road 20. The village has a strong history of people working together.

Moving the St. John Lutheran Church

Nearly a hundred years ago, the people of St. John Lutheran Church decided to move their church building into the village. This was done to better serve the people of Royal, both then and in the future. Not everyone agreed at first, but after the decision was made, the community worked together.

The men and boys carefully took the church apart, brick by brick. They then moved these bricks from the countryside into the village. The women and older men then carefully cleaned the old mortar off each brick. These cleaned bricks were then used to build a new St. John Lutheran Church in Royal. This church still stands today and continues to be an important part of the community.

Building the Community Center

In 1982, around the time Royal was celebrating its 100th birthday, people started talking about building a shared Community Building. This building would be for everyone in Royal. Inspired by the example of the church members, the wider community came together with a shared vision.

An old apartment building in Champaign, Illinois was going to be torn down. Just like with the church, people gathered the bricks from this old building and worked together to clean them. These recycled bricks were then used to build the new Community Building. It was finished the year after Royal's 100th anniversary. This building is still used today by the people of Royal for different events, both private and public.
