Royal Navy Search and Rescue 60 was a special series of events held in 2013. These events celebrated 60 years since the Royal Navy first used helicopters for search and rescue missions. This means helping people who are in danger, like at sea or in remote areas.

What is Royal Navy Search and Rescue?

The Royal Navy's Search and Rescue (SAR) teams use helicopters to find and help people. They often rescue sailors, pilots, or others in trouble. These teams are highly trained and ready to respond quickly.

Celebrating 60 Years of Rescue

The RN SAR 60 celebrations began on January 12, 2013. Commander Finn, who was in charge of the Sea King helicopters, launched the event. This happened at the London Boat Show.

A special Sea King HAR.5 rescue helicopter flew to London. It came from 771 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Culdrose (HMS Seahawk) in Cornwall. The helicopter and its crew performed amazing rescue demonstrations. They showed off their skills in the Royal Victoria Dock.

Other members of 771 Naval Air Squadron also helped. Their sister unit, HMS Gannet SAR Flight from Scotland, joined them. They all ran a Royal Navy stand at the show. Many more events took place throughout 2013. The biggest event was the 2013 RNAS Culdrose Air Day. This day also focused on search and rescue.

Helping Others: Charity Work

The Royal Navy Search and Rescue teams did more than just celebrate. They also aimed to raise a lot of money for charity. Their goal was to collect £60,000 during the year.

They raised this money in many different ways. The money was then shared among three important charities:

  • The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity
  • CLIC Sargent (a charity for young cancer patients)
  • Children's Hospice South West (a hospice for children with life-limiting conditions)
