History of Royalton
How Royalton Was Formed
Royalton officially became a borough in September 1891. It was created by joining two smaller communities: Furnace Hill, which was to the north, and Port Royal, which was to the south. The first person to be in charge of the post office in Royalton was Mary E. Snavely.
Early Businesses and Growth
In the early days, Royalton had a few important businesses. One was a large planing mill, built by John McCreary in 1891. A planing mill is a place where wood is smoothed and shaped.
Around 1900, the Middletown Shale Brick Works opened in the southeast part of the borough. This company made bricks from shale. It was run by several people, including H. O. Keener and Dr. J. C. Nissley. Within just four years, the brick works grew a lot. It had 30 workers and made about 25,000 bricks every year!

Where Royalton Is Located
Royalton is found in the southern part of Dauphin County. It sits right next to two important waterways. The Susquehanna River is to its southwest, and Swatara Creek is to its west and north. Across Swatara Creek is the borough of Middletown.
Roads and Nearby Cities
Pennsylvania Route 441 (also known as Canal Street) runs through the middle of Royalton. This road goes north into Middletown. If you go southeast along the river, it's about 18 miles (29 km) to Columbia.
Harrisburg, which is the capital city of Pennsylvania, is about 11 miles (18 km) to the northwest of Royalton, up the river.
