Ruanruan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Ruanruan language (also called Rouran) was an extinct language spoken a long time ago in Mongolia and northern China. People used this language during the Rouran Khaganate, which was a powerful empire from the 4th to the 6th centuries CE.

Scientists are still trying to figure out exactly what kind of language Ruanruan was. Some think it might be related to Altaic languages or Sino-Tibetan languages, which are large groups of languages.

In 2018, some important old writings, called the Brāhmī Bugut and Khüis Tolgoi inscriptions, were studied. These writings suggest that Ruanruan was actually a Mongolic language. This means it might have been similar to Middle Mongolian, an older form of the Mongolian language spoken today.
