Rubén Martínez: A Football Goalkeeper
Rubén was born in Coristanco, a place in Galicia, Spain. He started playing football at a young age. He joined the famous FC Barcelona's youth academy in 1997. This is where young players learn and train to become professional footballers.
Early Career and Barcelona Years
Rubén spent five years in Barcelona's youth system. By 2002, he moved up to the club's reserve team, Barcelona B. He was even the third-choice goalkeeper for the main FC Barcelona team in the 2004–05 season. This meant he was ready to play if the other two goalkeepers couldn't.
He played his first game for Barcelona's main team on December 18, 2004. He came into the game after the first-choice goalkeeper was sent off. He helped his team get a 1-1 draw against Valencia CF. He also played in the next game, where Barcelona won 2-1 against Levante UD.
After more time with the B team, Rubén went on loan to Racing de Ferrol in 2007. A "loan" means a player temporarily plays for another team. He didn't play any games there, and the team was moved down a league.
Playing for Different Clubs
Rubén left Barcelona and joined FC Cartagena in 2008. He quickly became their main goalkeeper. In his first season, his team was promoted to a higher league. They almost got promoted again in his second season!
In 2010, Rubén moved to Málaga CF. He played his first game for them on September 23, where he kept a "clean sheet." This means the other team didn't score any goals. He got injured later that year, which kept him from playing for a while. After he recovered, he lost his starting spot to other goalkeepers.
Rubén then went on loan to Rayo Vallecano for the 2012–13 season. He played so well there that he signed a permanent contract with them in 2013. He then played for UD Almería in 2014.
In 2015, Rubén joined Levante UD. After his team was moved down a league, he moved to Deportivo de La Coruña. In 2017, he went on loan to R.S.C. Anderlecht, a club in Belgium. He played his first game in a big European competition called the UEFA Europa League while there.
Rubén signed with CA Osasuna in 2018. He played many games for them and helped them win their league in his first season. He continued to play for Osasuna until 2021. His last club was AEK Larnaca FC in Cyprus, where he played in the Cypriot First Division.
International Games for Spain
Rubén also played for Spain's national youth teams. He played one game for the Spain under-21 team in 2004. He came on as a substitute in a friendly game against England, which Spain won 1-0. He also played for the Spain under-20 and under-23 teams.
