Rubén Iván Martínez Andrade (born on June 22, 1984), known simply as Rubén, is a Spanish professional footballer. He plays as a goalkeeper, protecting his team's goal.

Rubén's Football Journey

Rubén was born in Coristanco, a town in Galicia, Spain. He started his football journey early, joining the famous FC Barcelona youth academy in 1997. This is where many talented young players learn to play football.

Early Career at Barcelona

After training in the youth academy, Rubén moved up to Barcelona's reserve teams in 2002. These teams help young players get ready for professional football. He even got to play a few games for the main FC Barcelona team between 2004 and 2008. One notable game was in December 2004, when he came on as a substitute against Valencia CF after the main goalkeeper was sent off. He then started the next game against Levante UD.

Moving to Other Spanish Clubs

After his time at Barcelona, Rubén joined FC Cartagena in 2008. He became a key player there, helping the team get promoted to a higher league in his first season. He almost helped them get promoted again in his second year!

In 2010, Rubén moved to Málaga CF. He played his first game for them in September, keeping a "clean sheet" (meaning the other team didn't score any goals) in a 2-0 win. However, he later got a wrist injury that kept him from playing for a while.

Playing for Rayo Vallecano

Rubén then went on loan to Rayo Vallecano for the 2012-2013 season. He played so well that he signed a permanent contract with them the next year. He was a regular starter for Rayo Vallecano, playing many games for them.

More Teams and European Debut

After Rayo Vallecano, Rubén played for UD Almería and Levante UD. He then joined Deportivo de La Coruña. In 2017, he had a special experience when he was loaned to R.S.C. Anderlecht, a club in Belgium. This was a big moment because he played his first-ever game in a European competition, the UEFA Europa League, against FC Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Return to Spain and Recent Years

In 2018, Rubén returned to Spain and joined CA Osasuna. He played a big part in helping them win the Segunda División (second division) in his first season, which meant they were promoted to La Liga, Spain's top football league. He continued to play for Osasuna until 2021.

His most recent club was AEK Larnaca FC in Cyprus, where he played in the 2021-2022 season.

International Games

Rubén also had the chance to represent his country, Spain, at different youth levels. He played one game for the Spain under-21 team in 2004, coming on as a substitute in a friendly match against England. He also played for the Spain under-20 and under-23 teams.

Honours and Achievements

Rubén has won several important titles throughout his career:

  • Barcelona
    • La Liga: 2004–05 (Spain's top league)
  • Anderlecht
  • Osasuna
  • Spain U23
    • Mediterranean Games: 2005 (a multi-sport event for countries around the Mediterranean Sea)
  • Spain U20
    • FIFA U-20 World Cup runner-up: 2003 (his team came in second place in this big international tournament for young players)
