Rubio is a small, unincorporated community in the state of Iowa, United States. It is located in the southwestern part of Washington County. An unincorporated community is a place where people live together but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town.
Rubio is found about three miles northwest of Richland. The Skunk River flows along the northern side of the community.
The Story of Rubio
Rubio was started in the year 1900. This happened when the Milwaukee Road railway line was built through the area. The community was named after a famous Mexican leader, Pascual Ortiz Rubio. He later became the president of Mexico.
Local Businesses and Schools
The Rubio Savings Bank first opened its doors in Rubio in 1906. Later, in 1946, the main office of this bank moved to Brighton.
A school for the children of Rubio opened in 1910. This school had two classrooms. It taught students until 1960, when there were 10 students enrolled. The school building was sold in 1962 and then taken down. Some of its wooden floor supports were later used to build a house in nearby Richland.
Community Events
In 1976, Rubio held a special event called the Rubio Lawn Social and Jubilee. This celebration took place on August 7 and 8. It was held to celebrate the 200th birthday of the United States, known as the American Bicentennial. The event included fun activities like a parade and a ceremony where postal awards were given out.
Education in Rubio
Students living in Rubio attend schools that are part of the Pekin Community School District. This school district is responsible for providing education to children in Rubio and the surrounding areas.
