Ruby, Nebraska facts for kids
Ruby is a small, unincorporated community located in Seward County, Nebraska, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
History of Ruby
Ruby has a short but interesting history. Like many small communities, it once had its own post office.
Early Days and the Post Office
A post office was opened in Ruby in 1883. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail, connecting the community to the rest of the world. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1905.
The 2001 Tornado
On June 13, 2001, a very powerful tornado, rated F4 on the Fujita scale, touched down north of Ruby. The F4 rating means it was an extremely strong tornado with winds between 207 and 260 miles per hour.
The tornado moved north-northeast, passing close to the city of Seward. It completely destroyed a farmstead, leaving only the foundation behind. While the damage was severe, thankfully, no one was killed. Two people were injured during the storm.
