About Ruby Andrews

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Ruby Stackhouse was born in Hollandale, Mississippi. When she was about six years old, around 1953, she moved to Chicago. In Chicago, she went to Hyde Park High School.

During her last year of high school, Ruby began singing with a group called the Vondells. Her first record was released on the Kelmac label. Even though she sang with the Vondells, the record was released under her birth name, Ruby Stackhouse.

Chart-Topping Songs

Ruby's third song for the Kelmac label became her biggest hit. This song was "Casanova (Your Playing Days Are Over)," released in 1967. It was a "crossover hit," meaning it was popular on both R&B and pop music charts. The song reached number 9 on the R&B charts and number 51 on the pop charts.

The song was co-written and produced by Joshie Jo Armstead. It had a typical Chicago-style sound. However, it was recorded and arranged by Mike Terry in Detroit. Later versions of the song correctly spelled "Casanova."

Later Career and Legacy

After "Casanova," Ruby released other popular songs. These included "You Can Run (But You Can't Hide)" and "You Made a Believer (Out of Me)." "You Made a Believer (Out of Me)" reached number 18 on the R&B chart and number 96 on the pop chart in 1969. "Everybody Saw You" was another hit, reaching number 34 on the R&B chart in 1970.

Ruby Andrews also released songs on the Zodiac label. These songs were produced and written by Fred Bridges, Robert Eaton, and Richard Knight. These three also formed a vocal group called Brothers Of Soul. Later in her career, Ruby recorded some bluesy songs for Ichiban Records. These were produced by Swamp Dogg. Today, Ruby Andrews is the CEO of her own record company, Genuine Ruby Records LLC.
