Ruccones facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Ruccones (also known as Rucones, Runcones, or Roccones) were a group of people who lived in northern Hispania (modern-day Spain) a long time ago, from the 400s to the 600s AD. They were probably related to the Astures or the Basques. The Ruccones lived mostly on their own, in an area that stretched from what is now Asturias to La Rioja.

Who Were the Ruccones?

The Ruccones were a tribal group. This means they lived in communities that were often based on family ties and shared customs, rather than being part of a large, organized kingdom. They were known for living in mountainous areas.

Ruccones in History

We know about the Ruccones from old writings by historians.

In the year 572 AD, a king named Miro from the Suevi people (who lived in Galicia) went to war against the Ruccones. King Miro wanted to make sure the Ruccones stayed under his control and didn't fall under the power of another group called the Visigoths.

Later, in 616 AD, another king named Sisebut from the Visigoths also fought against the Ruccones. He managed to defeat them in the mountains. Under King Sisebut, a general named Suinthila also won a battle against the Ruccones.

Sometimes, when the Visigoths conquered new lands, they would set up places to make coins. This helped them show their power. There's a theory that a mint (coin-making place) was set up in a place called Pésicos after battles with the Ruccones.

Where Did They Live?

Historians and scholars have different ideas about exactly where the Ruccones lived.

Some think they might have been the same as the Cantabri people. Others believe they could be the Araucones, who lived in a semi-independent area between the Visigothic and Suevic kingdoms.

One idea is that they lived near a place called Villuercas, close to the Ruecas and Árrago rivers. This area is in modern-day Extremadura.

The Spanish Royal Academy of History suggests that the Ruccones might have been a group of Basques. They think the Ruccones, like the Cantabrians, were a local group within a larger people.

Another idea is that the Ruccones were the same as the Luggones, who were an important group in Asturias. Many experts, including archaeologists, are starting to think this is a strong possibility.
