The Story of Ruckersville

How Ruckersville Began

Ruckersville was started a long time ago, in the year 1773. It was named after another place called Ruckersville, Virginia. A very important family, the Ruckers, were among the first people to settle there. They built a house called the Rucker House, which you can still see today!

Ruckersville's Past Life as a Town

For many years, Ruckersville had its own post office, which opened in 1823. This was a place where people could send and receive letters. The post office stayed open until 1901.

In 1822, the state government of Georgia, called the Georgia General Assembly, officially made Ruckersville a town. This meant it had its own local rules and leaders. However, in 1995, the special document that made it a town, called its "municipal charter," was taken away. So, Ruckersville went back to being an unincorporated community.

A Famous Person from Ruckersville

A very important person named Joseph Rucker Lamar was born in Ruckersville in 1857. He grew up to become a judge on the highest court in the United States, the Supreme Court of the United States. He was an "associate justice," which means he was one of the main judges who helped make big decisions about the law for the whole country. He served on the Supreme Court until he passed away in 1916.
