Rudaw Media Network (Kurdish: تۆڕی میدیاییی ڕووداو, romanized: Tora Medyayî ya Rûdaw) is a big news company. It is based in Erbil, which is the capital of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. Rudaw shares news and information in many languages. These include English, Kurdish (both Sorani and Kurmanji dialects), Arabic, and Turkish.
How Rudaw Started
Rudaw Media Network first began as a weekly newspaper. This newspaper was printed and given out in the Kurdistan Region and in Europe. It became well-known because of its European edition. This edition helped Kurdish people living far from home stay connected. Later, Rudaw stopped printing newspapers. It became a fully digital news source, meaning all its news is now online.
Today, Rudaw offers many ways to get news. It has a website available in Kurdish, English, Arabic, and Turkish. There is also a satellite TV station. Rudaw Media Network is supported by the Rudaw Company. Its main goal is to share news and information about Kurdistan and the wider Middle East. Rudaw also has a radio news channel. This channel broadcasts on shortwave radios across the Middle East. You can also watch their live TV online from anywhere in the world.
Rudaw's Research Center
The Rudaw Research Center is located in Erbil city. It started in 2016. This center works with many different groups. Some of these partners include the Wilson Center for Middle East, JSTOR, and The Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
The center also hosts an event called the Erbil Forum every year. This forum brings together important people. These include leaders, decision-makers, and experts. They meet to talk about important issues.
Awards and Recognition
Rudaw and its team have won many awards for their excellent work.
- In 2024, Diyar Kurda, who leads Rudaw's office in Washington DC, won a special award. The Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the USA (AFPC-USA) named him one of the best reporters in the United States.
- Rudaw's website has also won several awards. In 2017, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers recognized it. This was for reaching 100 million people on social media.
- Majeed Gly from Rudaw Media Network received the Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize. This award is for broadcast media. The United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) gave him this prize in New York.
- Shahyan Tahseen was recognized for her great work at Rudaw. The global media group FIPP named her one of the "Highly Commended Rising Stars." FIPP has over 500 member companies in more than 60 countries. This award celebrates outstanding work in the global media industry.
- In 2023, Rudaw Media Network won the Gold Stevie Award. This was from the International Business Awards. They won for being the best medium-sized media and entertainment company of the year. This award recognized their great achievements in media.
- Also in 2023, Rudaw Media Network received an official certificate. The American Society for Autism gave it to them. This was for helping to raise awareness about autism in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. They were recognized for being a positive force for good.
