What is the Rudston Roman Villa?
A Roman villa was like a large farm or country estate. Wealthy Roman families lived there. The Rudston Roman villa was built mostly between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. This means it was used about 1,700 to 1,800 years ago! It was a "courtyard villa." This means its buildings were arranged around an open central area, like a big yard. The villa had beautiful floor art called mosaics. It also had a small bath house on its eastern side.
How Was the Villa Discovered?
The first parts of the Rudston Roman villa were found by accident. In 1838, a farm worker found some ancient remains. Much later, in 1933, a farmer named H. Robson was ploughing his field. He discovered an amazing mosaic floor. This mosaic is now famous and is called the 'Venus mosaic'.
Life Before the Romans
Before the Roman villa was built, there was an even older settlement here. Archaeologists have found signs of a rectangular area from the 1st or 2nd century AD. Even before that, there was an Iron Age settlement. The Iron Age in Britain was a time before the Romans arrived. People lived in this spot for a very long time!
Amazing Mosaics of Rudston
The mosaics found at Rudston Roman villa are very special. They are like ancient floor paintings made from tiny colored stones.
The Venus Mosaic
When farmer H. Robson found the 'Venus mosaic', he wanted to protect it. He built a small shed over it so people could see it. But over time, cold weather and ice started to damage the mosaic. To keep it safe, the 'Venus mosaic' was moved. Since 1963, you can see it at the Hull and East Riding Museum.
The Charioteer Mosaic
Another important mosaic was found later. In 1971, during more digging, the 'Charioteer mosaic' was discovered. This mosaic shows a quadriga. A quadriga is a chariot pulled by four horses. This mosaic also dates back to the 4th century AD.
Protecting the Villa for the Future
The Rudston Roman villa is a very important historical site. Because of its age and how it was found, it faces some challenges. The site is on a list called the 'heritage at risk register'. This means it has "extensive significant problems." For example, ploughing in the fields nearby can accidentally damage the ancient remains. Experts are working to protect this amazing piece of history for everyone to learn from.
