Rudy Lewis (born Charles Rudolph Harrell; August 23, 1936 – May 20, 1964) was an American singer. He was famous for his work with the music group The Drifters. He sang a type of music called rhythm and blues, often called R&B. This music mixes jazz, gospel, and blues.

In 1988, Rudy Lewis was honored after his death. He was added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is a special place for famous musicians.

Rudy Lewis's Music Career

Rudy Lewis started singing in gospel music. This is a type of music with religious themes. He was one of only two men who sang with the famous Clara Ward Singers. He sang with this gospel group for a long time.

One day, he tried out for George Treadwell. This was at the Uptown Theater in Philadelphia. He was hired right away.

Joining The Drifters

Rudy Lewis joined The Drifters as their main singer. He took the place of Ben E. King. Rudy sang many of the songs that Ben E. King used to sing.

He became the lead voice for many popular songs. These included "Please Stay" and "Some Kind of Wonderful". He also sang on "Up On The Roof" and "On Broadway".

Rudy also sang on other Drifters songs. Some of these were "Another Night With The Boys" and "Beautiful Music". Other songs included "Jackpot" and "Let The Music Play".

Solo Music

In April 1963, Rudy Lewis recorded his own songs. One song was called "Baby I Dig Love". The other side of the record, called the B-side, was "I've Loved You So Long". These songs came out in May 1963. However, they did not become big hits.

Rudy Lewis was a member of The Drifters from late 1960. He sang with them until his death in 1964.

His Early Life

Rudy Lewis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When he was 24, he moved to New York City. This was after he joined The Drifters.

His Passing

On May 21, 1964, Rudy Lewis was found in his hotel room. The group was supposed to record a new song that day. The song was called "Under the Boardwalk". It was written especially for Rudy to sing.

After his passing, Johnny Moore, another singer, came back to sing for the recording. The next day, The Drifters recorded "I Don't Want to Go On Without You". This song was led by Charlie Thomas. It was a tribute to Rudy Lewis.

Rudy Lewis was 27 years old when he passed away.
