The rufous shrikethrush (Colluricincla rufogaster) is a type of bird. It belongs to the Pachycephalidae family. This family includes birds like whistlers and other shrikethrushes.
About the Rufous Shrikethrush
Scientists used to think the rufous shrikethrush was the same as the little shrikethrush. But studies of their genes showed they are quite different. These studies looked at birds living in New Guinea. They found big differences in their DNA. This means they are actually separate species.
Different Kinds of Rufous Shrikethrush
There are three main types, or subspecies, of the rufous shrikethrush. Each one lives in a slightly different area:
- C. r. rufogaster - Gould, 1845: This type was first described by John Gould in 1845. You can find it in south-eastern Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales in eastern Australia.
- C. r. goodsoni - (Hartert, E, 1930): This type lives near the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is also found on the Cape York Peninsula and islands in the Torres Strait. You can also see it along the coast of New Guinea's Trans-Fly region.
- C. r. griseata - (Gray, GR, 1858): This type was described by G.R. Gray in 1858. It lives in north-eastern Queensland, Australia.
Where They Live and What They Like
The rufous shrikethrush lives in both New Guinea and Australia. It likes to live in warm, wet places. Its favorite habitats are lowland forests that are moist and tropical or subtropical. It also lives in moist forests found on mountains in tropical or subtropical areas.
