Rugemont Castle was a castle located in the small village of Ridgmont. This village is in the county of Bedfordshire, England.

What Was Rugemont Castle?

Rugemont Castle was an old castle from the Middle Ages. It was likely built from wood. Castles like this were important strongholds. They provided protection and a home for powerful families.

A Look Back in Time

We do not know a lot about Rugemont Castle's early history. It was not mentioned in any records until the 12th century. This means it was built sometime before then.

People believe it was a wooden castle. It was first the home of the Wahull family. Later, the de Grey family lived there.

The castle seemed to be connected to Brogborough Manor. It is said that Oliver Cromwell stayed there for a short time. This was during the English Civil War. He might have used the castle's defensive ditches for protection.

What's Left Today?

Today, you cannot see a full castle at Rugemont. What is left are mounds of earth. These are the remains of an early medieval 'ringwork' castle. A ringwork castle was a type of castle built with a circular bank and ditch.

Sadly, much of the original castle site was destroyed. This happened in the 1800s when a building called the Round House was built. Even so, the site is still very important. Today, it is a protected historical site. This means it is legally protected because of its historical importance.
