Shipwrecks and Sunken Treasures
Ruggles Island is known for a couple of old shipwrecks found nearby. These sunken ships tell interesting stories from the past.
The Sea Ranger Clipper
In September 1860, a US clipper ship named the Sea Ranger sank off the coast of Ruggles Island. Clippers were very fast sailing ships, often used for trade.
The Luigrya and its Marble Statues
Another ship, the Italian vessel Luigrya, went down near the island in September 1885. This ship was carrying a special cargo: a hold full of beautiful marble statues! Local stories say that you can still see these statues under the water.
Discovery of the Luigrya Wreck
Many years later, in 1994, a small team of divers from Port Stanley decided to explore. The team included Dave Eynon, Mike Triggs, Simon Goss, and Phil Rozee. They found the Luigrya lying in about 8 meters (26 feet) of water near Ruggles Island. Amazingly, its cargo of marble statues was still there and mostly intact!
