Rui Maria de Araújo was born on 21 May 1964. He is a doctor and a politician from East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste. He served as the country's Prime Minister from 2015 to 2017. A Prime Minister is the leader of the government in many countries.
Before becoming Prime Minister, Rui Maria de Araújo was the Minister of Health for East Timor from 2001 to 2006. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007. He is a member of the political party called Fretilin.
He officially became Prime Minister of East Timor on 16 February 2015. He held this important role until 2017, when Mari Alkatiri took over.
Early Life and Education
Rui Maria de Araújo was born in a village called Mape, Cova Lima, on 21 May 1964. He is married to Teresa António Madeira Soares, and they have two children.
He studied medicine at Sultan Agung Islamic University in Semarang, Indonesia. After becoming a doctor, he specialized in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery at Udayana University in Bali, Indonesia. This field of medicine is called otolaryngology.
He also earned a Master's degree in Public Health from Otago University in New Zealand. Before studying medicine, he spent a year studying English literature at Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga, Indonesia.
