The Ruisseau des Meules (which means millstone stream in English) is a small stream in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Rivière du Moulin. The Rivière du Moulin then joins the Chaudière River, which eventually flows north into the mighty St. Lawrence River.
This stream is located in the town of Saint-Alfred. It is part of the Robert-Cliche Regional County Municipality and the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec.
Where the Stream Flows
The Ruisseau des Meules is about 7.6 kilometres (4.7 mi) long. It starts where two smaller streams meet in a farming area in Saint-Alfred. This starting point is about 4.1 kilometres (2.5 mi) northeast of the village of Saint-Victor. It's also about 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) northwest of the center of Saint-Alfred.
From its source, the stream flows mostly northeast. It travels downhill quite a bit, dropping about 170 metres (560 ft) from start to finish. Along its journey, it passes under a few country roads.
The Ruisseau des Meules finally empties into the west side of the Rivière du Moulin. This meeting point is also in the town of Saint-Alfred.
What's in a Name?
The name "Ruisseau des Meules" means "millstone stream." This name is connected to the nearby Rivière du Moulin, which means "mill river." Both names suggest a history of grinding grains, likely using water-powered mills.
Around 1910, there was a lot of interest in finding gold in this area. The "Rigaud-Vaudreuil gold fields" invested a lot of money into searching for gold here.
The official name "Ruisseau des Meules" was recognized on March 6, 1970, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
