A Look Back: Rushmore Mall's History
How Rushmore Mall Started
When Rushmore Mall first opened, its main stores were JCPenney and Sears. Both of these stores moved from downtown Rapid City to the new mall. Herberger's was also one of the original main stores, located on the south side of the mall.
In 1980, Target became the fourth main store, opening on the north side. Later, in 1995, Herberger's built a new, bigger store west of Target. Scheels All Sports then took over the original Herberger's spot.
Changes Over the Years
The store At Home is now in the space where Target used to be. Target moved to a different shopping area called Rushmore Crossing. JCPenney also moved temporarily into the empty Target space from 2014 to 2016 while its own store was being updated.
A bookstore called Borders opened near the mall in 1999. It closed in 2011 and later became another bookstore, Books-A-Million.
New Owners and New Stores
In 2018, Sears announced it would be closing its store at the mall. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. The Sears store at Rushmore Mall closed in April 2018.
Soon after, Herberger's also announced it would close in August 2018. Their parent company, The Bon-Ton, was going out of business. After these closures, JCPenney and At Home were the only main retail stores left.
Later in 2018, Spinoso bought the mall. In 2019, the old Sears store became Traders Market, bringing a new shopping option to the mall.
