Rushville is a place in Jasper County, Iowa, United States. It used to be a small community, but now it is mostly gone. It is located in Kellogg Township.
History of Rushville
Rushville was planned out in 1857. It started as a stop for stagecoaches, which were like old-time buses. These coaches carried people and mail across the country.
Early Buildings and Life
The only store in Rushville was run by the Whitcomb family. This store also held the local post office. Rushville had a church, several homes, and later, a school. It was a small but active community.
Decline of the Town
Over time, a railroad was built. It went around Rushville, about two miles to the south. This meant that trains did not stop in Rushville. People and goods started using the railroad instead of stagecoaches. This caused Rushville to slowly shrink. By 1915, only one person lived there.
Rushville Today
In 1957, the school in Rushville joined with the school in nearby Kellogg. The old school building was later taken down. Today, there are no buildings left in Rushville. Only a few farms are nearby. A special memorial spot remains where the town once stood. It has a plaque, a flag, and an old water pump. The nearby Rushville Cemetery is still taken care of.
