Early Career and College Years
Russell Hinder first went to college in the United States. He attended the University of San Francisco. Later, in 2000, he moved to Augusta State University.
Playing in the NBL
After college, Russell came back to Australia. He joined the West Sydney Razorbacks in the NBL. In his last season with the Razorbacks, he helped the team reach the NBL Grand Final. This is the championship game of the league. His great performance also earned him third place for the Most Improved Player award.
After playing for the Razorbacks, Russell moved to the Hunter Pirates. He played there for one year before the team left the league.
Joining the Sydney Kings
Russell then joined the Sydney Kings. This was a big step in his career. While playing for the Kings, he earned a spot on the Australian national team, known as the Australian Boomers.
Commonwealth Games Gold
With the Australian Boomers, Russell won a Gold Medal. This happened at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. It was a proud moment for him and his country. That same year, he also played in the FIBA World Championships.
Russell helped the Sydney Kings reach two NBL Grand Finals. However, they lost both times to the Melbourne Tigers. Just like the Hunter Pirates, the Sydney Kings team also stopped playing after the 2007/08 NBL season.
Moving to Townsville Crocodiles
Without a team, Russell almost decided to stop playing basketball. But then, he got a chance to sign with the Townsville Crocodiles. This happened just after their main centre, Ben Pepper, left the team.
When Russell arrived in Townsville, he shared his goal. He wanted to help the Crocodiles win an NBL championship. The team had never won one before. Russell himself had played in three NBL finals but had never won a series.
Later Career and Retirement
In the 2008–09 season, Russell won the Players' Player Award for the Townsville Crocodiles. This award is voted on by his teammates.
Russell faced a tough challenge in the 2011–12 NBL season. He broke his leg and could not play for the entire season.
On 4 November 2013, Russell announced he would retire from basketball. His last season was the 2013–14 NBL season. On 22 March 2014, he played his 350th and final NBL game. It was a victory for the Crocodiles against his former team, the Sydney Kings. In that last game, he played for 31 minutes. He scored 13 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, made 1 assist, and had 1 block.
