Rutger Maclean I (1688–1748) was a brave officer from Sweden. He fought for Charles XII of Sweden in important battles during the Great Northern War. Some of these battles included the Battle of Holowczyn, the Battle of Poltava, and the Battle of Tobolsk.

Rutger Maclean I was born in 1688. His father was David Makeléer. David was the first governor of Älvsborg County in Sweden. A governor is like a leader of a region. Rutger also spent some time studying in England.

Rutger Maclean I married a woman named Vilhelmina Eleonora Coyet. They had at least four children together:

  • David Macklean, who also became a Baron.
  • Rutger Macklean II (1742–1816). He was very important in changing how land was owned in Sweden. This was called "land reform."
  • Eleonora Charlotta Macklean (1744–1777). She was born on June 12, 1744, in a place called Svaneholm.
  • Gustaf Macklean. He lived on a farm called Brodda, near Svaneholm.
