Ruth Chew (born April 8, 1920 – died May 13, 2010) was an American writer and artist. She wrote and illustrated more than 30 books for children. Most of her stories were about magic and fantasy. These books were often early chapter books for young readers. Many were published by Scholastic Corporation in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of her books are now being published again by Random House.

Ruth Chew was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 8, 1920. She studied art at the Corcoran School of Art. Later, she moved to Manhattan to work as a fashion artist. In 1948, she moved to Brooklyn.

In 1953, Ruth Chew moved into a special house in Brooklyn. This house became the setting for many of her magical stories. She passed away on May 13, 2010, in Castro Valley, California.
