Ruth Byrne started her education at University College Dublin (UCD). She earned a degree in Psychology in 1983. Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior. After that, she continued her studies at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). She completed her PhD in Cognitive Psychology in 1986. A PhD is a very high academic degree.
Early Work and Return to Ireland
After finishing her PhD, Ruth Byrne worked as a research scientist. She was at the Applied Psychology Unit at the University of Cambridge in England from 1986 to 1989. Then, she became a lecturer in Psychology at Cardiff University in Wales from 1989 to 1991.
In 1991, she moved back to Ireland. She first worked at University College Dublin in the computer science department. Later that same year, she moved to the psychology department at Trinity College Dublin. She quickly became a very respected professor.

Ruth Byrne became an associate professor at Trinity College Dublin in 1999. This role is now called a professor. By 2005, she became a full professor, holding a special position as Professor of Cognitive Science.
She was also elected as a Fellow of TCD in 1995. This is a special honor given to top academics. In 2021, she became a Senior Fellow. From 2005 to 2008, she served as the Vice Provost of TCD.
