Early Life and Education
Ruth Marguerite Easterling was born in 1898. She was the only child of James David Easterling and his wife. When she was a child, her family moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In Cambridge, Ruth attended Ellis Grammar School. Later, she went to Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. She was a bright student.
After high school, she continued her education at Jackson College for Women. At just 19 years old, she began studying at the Medical School of Tufts College. She worked very hard and graduated on June 10, 1921.
Her Medical Career
After finishing medical school, Dr. Easterling completed her internship. An internship is like a training period for new doctors. She did hers at Metropolitan Hospital on Wards Island.
Dr. Easterling became a pathologist. Pathologists are doctors who study diseases. They often work in laboratories. She worked with another scientist, William Augustus Hinton. Together, they helped develop an important medical test.
She also worked at different hospitals. She was on the staff at the Tuskegee Veterans Administration Hospital in Alabama. Later, she became the director of laboratories at the Cambridge Massachusetts City Hospital. This meant she was in charge of all the lab work there.
Her Passing
Dr. Easterling passed away at the Cambridge City Hospital. She was 45 years old.
