The Rutland Courthouse Historic District is a special area in Rutland, Vermont. It has many buildings that look good together. These buildings are used for government work and as homes. Most of the buildings in this area were built between 1850 and 1875. You can find important city and county buildings here. These include the Rutland County courthouse, the Rutland Free Library, and the Grace Congregational United Church. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it is a place important to history.
Exploring the Rutland Courthouse District
The Rutland Courthouse District is a mix of homes and public buildings. It is where many important city and county jobs happen. There is also a small area with beautiful homes from the 1800s.
Where is the District Located?
The district has clear boundaries.
- Its eastern edge is South Main Street. This street is part of US 7 and US 4. It runs between West and Washington Streets. In this area, you can find two parks. There is also the Chaffee Art Center. This art center is in a lovely Queen Anne Victorian style house built in 1892.
- The southern boundary is Washington Street. It goes from South Main to Prospect Street. This part of the district has many beautiful Italianate style houses. These homes were built between 1850 and 1875. This was a time when Rutland was growing fast. Railroads came to town, and the marble industry became very important.
Important Buildings in the District
The western side of the district is Court Street. It runs between Washington and West Streets.
- At the corner of Court and Center Streets, you will find the Rutland County Courthouse. This is a fancy brick building built in 1869. It was built after the first courthouse burned down.
- Right across Court Street is the Rutland Free Library. This building was first built in 1856-58. It was used as a federal building and post office. It was the first big building constructed in this district. It also has a detailed Italianate design. The famous architect Ammi B. Young helped design it.
- The northern boundary of the district is West Street. This is a main road that goes west from downtown Rutland. It runs between Main and Elm Streets.
