Rutledge Melvin Dennis (born August 16, 1939) is an American sociologist. A sociologist is a scientist who studies human society and how people interact. Dr. Dennis is a professor at George Mason University.
He is well-known for his studies on the work of W. E. B. Du Bois. Du Bois was an important African American leader and writer. Dr. Dennis also helped start the African American studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Rutledge Melvin Dennis was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1939. He grew up to become a professor. He teaches about how people live together in groups. This field of study is called sociology.
Early Career and Leadership
Dr. Dennis has held many important roles. From 1982 to 1983, he was the president of the Association of Black Sociologists. This group helps Black sociologists and promotes their work.
He was also the first coordinator of African American studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. This program teaches students about the history and culture of African Americans.
Awards and Recognition
Dr. Dennis has received several awards for his important work. In 2001, he got the Joseph S. Himes Distinguished Scholarship Award. This award recognized his excellent research.
In 2006, he received the DuBois-Johnson-Frazier Award. This award is from the American Sociological Association. It is a very high honor in sociology. The award statement said he was "one of the leading scholars on DuBois."
The Dennis-Weathers Award
In 2010, Dr. Dennis created a special award. It is called the Dennis-Weathers award. He named it to honor his parents and godparents. This award is given every year. It goes to a top student in African American studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. This award helps support young scholars.
