A big moment for him was qualifying for the 2017 BDO World Darts Championship. He won his first match against Dennis Nilsson. In the next round, he played against the famous Martin Adams. It was a very close game, going all the way to a sudden-death leg, but Ryan lost 3-2.
Outside of these major events, Ryan reached three BDO finals. He also had success in pairs competitions, winning the Turkish Open pairs in 2013 and the Welsh Open pairs in 2015 with his partner Andy Chalmers. Later that year, he made his first appearance at the 2018 Players Championship Finals. He was the 27th seed but lost in the first round.
