Ryan Telfer (born on March 4, 1994) is a professional footballer from Trinidad. He plays as a winger, which means he plays on the sides of the field. Ryan currently plays for Canadian Premier League club HFX Wanderers and for the Trinidad and Tobago national team.
Ryan Telfer's Club Career
Starting Out in Football
Ryan Telfer was born in Canada but grew up in Trinidad, where his parents are from. He started playing football with a team called Skhy FC. Later, he moved back to Canada and played youth soccer for the Erin Mills Eagles.
In 2012, he joined the senior team, Mississauga Eagles FC, in the Canadian Soccer League. In 2014, he played for Erin Mills Eagles again in the Ontario Soccer League. He was the top goalscorer in his division that year!
In 2015, Ryan played college football for the York Lions. He helped them win both the OUA and CIS championships. He also earned an OUA West second-team all-star award. In 2016, he played for League1 Ontario club Vaughan Azzurri.
Playing for Toronto FC Teams
On March 24, 2017, Ryan signed with Toronto FC II, a team in the United Soccer League. He played his first game on March 25, 2017, against Phoenix Rising FC. He scored the only goal in that game, helping his team win 1–0!
On April 13, 2018, Ryan moved up to play for Toronto FC, a team in Major League Soccer. He made his debut for the main team on April 14, 2018, against the Colorado Rapids. On May 18, 2018, Ryan scored his first MLS goal against Orlando City. This goal was the winning goal for Toronto FC! After nine seasons, Ryan decided to leave Toronto FC to find more playing opportunities.
Loan to York9 FC
On March 6, 2019, Ryan was loaned to York9 FC, a team in the Canadian Premier League. He made history by scoring the very first goal in Canadian Premier League history! This happened on April 27, 2019, against Forge FC. The game ended in a 1–1 draw.
Playing in Cyprus and Returning to York
On January 29, 2020, Ryan signed with Nea Salamis, a team in the Cypriot First Division in Cyprus.
However, he left Nea Salamis in May 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He then returned to Canada and rejoined York9 on June 3.
Atlético Ottawa
On April 20, 2021, Ryan signed with Atlético Ottawa. He played his first game for them in a 2–0 win against FC Edmonton. Ryan scored his first goal for Atlético Ottawa on August 2. Later that month, he was sent off the field in a game against the HFX Wanderers. This meant he was suspended and missed five games. In January 2022, Atlético Ottawa decided not to extend his contract.
Columbus Crew 2 and Miami FC
On April 1, 2022, Columbus Crew 2 announced they had signed Ryan. He played for them during the 2022 season. After that season, he left the team.
In January 2023, Ryan signed with Miami FC, a team in the USL Championship.
HFX Wanderers
In February 2024, Ryan returned to the Canadian Premier League. He signed with the HFX Wanderers. He played his first game for them on April 13, 2024, against Pacific FC.
Ryan Telfer's International Career
Ryan was born in Canada and grew up in Trinidad and Tobago. This meant he could play for either country. In August 2019, the coach for the Canadian national team said he was watching Ryan.
However, on September 3, 2019, Ryan was called up to play for the Trinidad and Tobago national team. He played in two matches for the 2019–20 CONCACAF Nations League against Martinique. Ryan made his debut for Trinidad and Tobago on September 6. In the second match on September 9, he scored his first goal for his country!
In June 2021, Ryan was chosen to be part of Trinidad and Tobago's team for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification tournament. His team successfully qualified for the main tournament. In June 2023, Ryan was again named to Trinidad and Tobago's team for the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
