Ryoichi Kawakatsu (川勝 良一, Kawakatsu Ryōichi), born on April 5, 1958, is a famous Japanese football player and manager. He played as a Midfielder and was also part of the Japan national football team.

Playing Career: A Midfielder's Journey

Ryoichi Kawakatsu was born in Kyoto, Japan. After finishing his studies at Hosei University, he began his professional football career. In 1981, he joined Toshiba, a club in the Japan Soccer League Division 2.

Success with Yomiuri

In 1983, Kawakatsu moved to Yomiuri, where he achieved great success. This club won the league championship three times: in 1983, 1984, and the 1986–87 season. They also won the Emperor's Cup in 1984, 1986, and 1987. Additionally, Yomiuri won the JSL Cup in 1985.

Later Club Years

After his time at Yomiuri, Kawakatsu played for his hometown club, Kyoto Shiko, starting in 1989. In 1990, he joined Tokyo Gas. He decided to retire from playing football in 1991.

Representing Japan: National Team Career

Ryoichi Kawakatsu made his debut for the Japan national football team on February 8, 1981. At that time, he was still a student at Hosei University. He played a total of 13 games for Japan until 1982.

Coaching Career: Leading Teams

After retiring as a player, Kawakatsu started his coaching journey. He began coaching at Tokyo Gas in 1991. In 1992, he moved to Verdy Kawasaki, which is now known as Tokyo Verdy.

Managing Top Clubs

Kawakatsu took on a manager role at Verdy Kawasaki in 1997 and again in 1998. In 1999, he became the manager for Vissel Kobe, staying with them until July 2002. Later, in June 2006, he managed Avispa Fukuoka. However, the club was moved down to the J2 League, and he resigned.

Return to Tokyo Verdy and Kyoto Sanga

In 2010, Kawakatsu returned to Tokyo Verdy as their manager and coached them until September 2012. His last managerial role was with Kyoto Sanga FC, where he signed in June 2014 and managed until the end of that season.
