Ryoichi Kawakatsu (川勝 良一, Kawakatsu Ryōichi, born April 5, 1958) is a famous Japanese football player and manager. He was born in Kyoto, Japan. Kawakatsu played as a Midfielder for several top clubs. He also proudly represented the Japan national team. After his playing career, he became a football manager.

Playing Career Highlights
Ryoichi Kawakatsu started his football journey in Kyoto. He was born there on April 5, 1958. After finishing his studies at Hosei University, he joined the Toshiba football club in 1981. This team played in the second division of the Japan Soccer League.
Success with Yomiuri
In 1983, Kawakatsu moved to Yomiuri, a very strong team. With Yomiuri, he achieved great success. The club won the league championship three times: in 1983, 1984, and 1986–87.
Yomiuri also won several important cup competitions. They won the Emperor's Cup in 1984, 1986, and 1987 Emperor's Cup. They also lifted the JSL Cup in 1985. Kawakatsu played a key role in these victories.
Later Club Years
After his time at Yomiuri, Kawakatsu played for other teams. In 1989, he joined Kyoto Shiko, a club from his hometown. He then played for Tokyo Gas in 1990. He decided to retire from playing football in 1991.
Representing Japan
Ryoichi Kawakatsu also played for his country. On February 8, 1981, he made his first appearance for the Japan national football team. This was a match against the Malaysia team. He was still a student at Hosei University at the time. He played a total of 13 games for Japan until 1982.
Coaching and Managing Teams
After retiring as a player, Kawakatsu began a new career as a coach. He started coaching at Tokyo Gas in 1991.
Managing Verdy Kawasaki
In 1992, he moved to Verdy Kawasaki. This club is now known as Tokyo Verdy. He became the manager of Verdy Kawasaki in 1997. He also managed the team in 1998.
Other Managerial Roles
From 1999 to 2002, Kawakatsu was the manager of Vissel Kobe. Later, in June 2006, he took over as manager for Avispa Fukuoka. However, the club was moved down to a lower league, and he resigned.
In 2010, he returned to manage Tokyo Verdy again. He stayed with them until September 2012. His last managerial role was with Kyoto Sanga FC. He managed them from June 2014 until the end of that season.
