Exploring S'Agaró's Coastline
The GR 92 is a long walking path that goes along the whole Mediterranean coast of Spain. In S'Agaró, this path uses an old route called the camí de ronda. This path was rebuilt to make a beautiful walk that mixes the sea, rocks, and pine trees with the buildings.
Walking North and South
If you walk north on the GR 92, you'll cross Sa Conca beach. The path then goes around the big Marina de Port d'Oro before reaching Platja d'Aro. If you walk south, you'll go along Sant Pol beach until you reach Sant Feliu de Guíxols. It's a great way to see the stunning coastline!
The Story of S'Agaró
The story of S'Agaró began in 1916. A businessman from Girona, Josep Ensesa i Pujades, bought some land between Sant Pol and Sa Conca beaches. His first idea was to build a summer house for himself. But then, he bought more land around it to create more plots for other houses. This is how the big plan to develop the area started. The new place didn't have a name, so his family decided to name it after a small stream nearby called Es Garó.
Building the First Homes
The plan didn't go smoothly at first, partly because of World War I. After the war, Josep Ensesa i Gubert, the son of the original buyer, built the very first house. It was called Senya Blanca and was finished in 1924. He asked a famous architect named Rafael Masó i Valentí to design it. Back then, the house didn't even have electricity or running water!
More land was bought, and Masó was put in charge of the whole development. He was inspired by the idea of "garden cities," which were planned communities with lots of green spaces. Masó had even visited a garden city in Germany in 1912.
A Vision for Design
Rafael Masó's job was to make sure the new community of seaside villas and a small inn would fit perfectly with the natural landscape. Masó loved traditional Catalan design. He used local building styles like porches, towers, terraces, and low roofs. He wanted to create a place for people who appreciated art and beauty. People who bought land had to agree to special rules to make sure all the buildings looked good together.
After Masó passed away in 1935, another architect named Francesc Folguera
took over the project. He went on to build the church, which is located on the highest point of the resort.S'Agaró and Hollywood
The famous Hostal de la GavinaAva Gardner, Suddenly Last Summer with Elizabeth Taylor, and Mr. Arkadin by Orson Welles were filmed there.
hotel was originally built by Masó as a home. Later, it was turned into a hotel, and Folguera did most of the work to make it what it is today. Starting in the 1950s, S'Agaró became a popular spot for Hollywood movies. Films like Pandora and the Flying Dutchman withBecause of this, the Hostal de La Gavina became a meeting place for many famous movie stars, musicians, political leaders, and even Nobel Prize winners!
