History of Sánchez
How Sánchez Got Its Name
Sánchez was first known as Las Cañitas. In 1866, it officially became a municipality. The town was renamed to honor Francisco del Rosario Sánchez. He was one of the important leaders who helped create the Dominican Republic. These leaders are often called "founding fathers."
The Railway and Port
Sánchez started as a small town. It became very important when a railway was built. This railway connected Sánchez to La Vega in the Cibao region. Thanks to the railway, Sánchez became one of the most important ports in the country. This was especially true in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
However, the railway stopped working in 1966. After that, the port of Sánchez became less important. Over time, the Yuna River has carried dirt and sand into Samaná Bay. This makes it harder for large ships to use the port. Now, only smaller boats can easily access it.
