Sébaco is a town and a municipality in the Matagalpa department of Nicaragua. It is located where the Pan-American Highway meets the Rio Grande de Matagalpa. Sébaco is the largest city in the agricultural Sébaco Valley. This valley is one of the most fertile areas in Nicaragua. If you look west from Sébaco, you can see vegetable fields stretching far away. About five kilometers north of the city, a highway branches off towards the city of Matagalpa.
The Name Sébaco
King Charles I of Spain once called this area "The Very Noble City of Sébaco." In 2006, the National Assembly of Nicaragua officially named the city Sébaco. The name Sébaco comes from the Nawat language. This language was spoken by the Nicarao people, who still live in the Sébaco Valley.
The name comes from "Siwakuat," which means "snake woman." Cihuacoatl was also an Aztec goddess of fertility and farming. When the Spanish arrived, they found it hard to say the original name. Their interpreters, who spoke Nahuatl, wrote it down incorrectly. Over time, the pronunciation changed to Sébaco.
