Sébastien Bordeleau: A Hockey Journey
Early Life and Junior Hockey Years
Sébastien Bordeleau was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. His father, Paulin, was playing for the Canucks at the time. Sébastien spent some of his childhood growing up in France because his dad played professional hockey there too.
When he was young, Sébastien loved hockey. He even played in the big Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He played in this tournament twice, once with a team from France and again with a team from Canada.
After moving back to Canada, Sébastien played for the Hull Olympiques in the QMJHL. This is a league for young, talented hockey players. He played there for four years. In 1993, the Montreal Canadiens picked him in the NHL Draft. He was the 73rd player chosen overall. After being drafted, he went back to his junior team to get even better. His best year in junior hockey was in 1994–95, when he scored an amazing 52 goals!
Playing in the NHL
Sébastien started his professional career playing for the Montreal Canadiens. He also spent time with their minor league team, the Fredericton Canadiens, in the AHL.
In 1998, Sébastien was traded to a brand new team, the Nashville Predators. He had a great first year with them, scoring 16 goals and getting 40 points. He was also one of their best players at stopping the other team from scoring, which is called penalty killing. He continued to play for the Predators for a couple more seasons.
Later in his NHL career, Sébastien also played for the Minnesota Wild and the Phoenix Coyotes. He often split his time between the main NHL team and their minor league affiliates.
Playing in Switzerland
After playing for seven years in North America, Sébastien decided to move overseas. In 2002, he started playing for SC Bern in the Swiss National League. This is the top hockey league in Switzerland. He played many successful seasons there, becoming a key player for his team. Later, he also played for EHC Biel in Switzerland before ending his career in 2012.
Representing France
Even though Sébastien was born in Canada, he represented France in international hockey tournaments. He played for France in the World Ice Hockey Championships in 2004 and again in 2008. It was a special experience for him to play for the country where he spent part of his childhood.
Family Life
Hockey runs in Sébastien's family! As mentioned, his father, Paulin Bordeleau, was also an NHL player. And the hockey tradition continues with Sébastien's son, Thomas Bordeleau, who is also a professional hockey player for the San Jose Sharks.
