Söderstadion (which means "the Southern Stadium") was a famous stadium in Stockholm, Sweden. It was a popular place for football and bandy games. The stadium first opened its doors in 1966 and closed in 2013. A newer stadium, Tele2 Arena, was built nearby to take its place.
Söderstadion could hold about 12,800 people, depending on the event. A record number of 22,000 fans once filled the stadium on October 31, 1982. This was for a big football match between Hammarby IF and IFK Göteborg.
There were even older stadiums on the same spot. The very first one opened in 1918 and was called Johanneshovs Idrottsplats. After Söderstadion closed, the area where it stood is now being used for new apartment buildings.
Bandy, a sport similar to ice hockey, was played at Söderstadion during the winter until 1989. The Swedish championship final was often held there. The Bandy World Championship 1987 final also took place at the arena. The last bandy match played at the stadium was the Swedish final of 1989.
The local bandy team, Hammarby, won the Swedish championship in 2010 and 2013. They now play their home games at Zinkensdamm. The stadium was also sometimes used for ice hockey games.
Why a New Stadium Was Built
Before the local elections in Stockholm in 2006, some political parties promised to build a new stadium. They kept their promise after winning the elections. On June 28, 2007, plans for a new stadium were officially announced.
The very last football game at Söderstadion happened on June 23, 2013. Hammarby IF played against Ängelholms FF in a league match. The game ended in a 1–1 draw. Kennedy Bakircioglu scored the final goal ever at Söderstadion, securing a late tie for Hammarby.
Getting to the Stadium
Söderstadion was located right next to the Ericsson Globe, another famous building. It was easy to get there using the Stockholm metro. People could get off at the Gullmarsplan or Globen stations.
Fun Facts About Söderstadion
The stadium is mentioned in the 1985 movie My Life as a Dog. In the film, the main character talks about a motorcycle accident. This accident happened during a motorcycle show held at the stadium, which was called by its old name in the movie.
