Avicii Arena is a famous indoor stadium in Stockholm, Sweden. It was first called the Stockholm Globe Arena and later the Ericsson Globe. Most people in Sweden still call it Globen, which means "the Globe". Even with the name changes, the local subway station is still named Globen metro station.
This arena is special because it represents the Sun in the Sweden Solar System. This is the world's largest model of our Solar System!

Building the Globe
Avicii Arena is the biggest round building on Earth. It took two and a half years to build. The building is 110 metres (360 ft) wide and 85 metres (279 ft) tall inside. It has a huge space inside, about 605,000 cubic metres (21,400,000 cu ft).
The arena can hold 16,000 people for concerts and shows. For ice hockey games, it can fit 13,850 fans. There are also 40 special VIP boxes and a restaurant high up in the building. The building is made of steel, concrete, and glass. It was designed by architects Berg Arkitektkontor AB.
History of the Arena
Globen opened its doors on February 19, 1989. It was built in less than three years. Some of the first big events held there were the Melodifestivalen (a music competition), the 1989 Ice Hockey World Championships, and the Men's European Volleyball Championships.
In 2009, a Swedish company called Ericsson bought the rights to the arena's name. So, it became known as the Ericsson Globe.
In 2021, the arena was renamed Avicii Arena. This was done to honor the famous Swedish DJ Avicii, who passed away in 2018. To celebrate the new name, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra played Avicii's song "For a Better Day". A fourteen-year-old Swedish singer named Ella Tiritiello sang the vocals.
The arena is currently being updated and modernized. This work started in 2024. The goal is to get it ready for big events like the 2025 IIHF World Championship. This hockey championship will be held in both Sweden and Denmark. After the arena reopens in early 2025, the nearby Hovet arena will be taken down. That area will become part of a new district called Soderhov. The company NCC is in charge of the renovation work. In 2027, the arena will host some games for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket.
Exciting Events

Avicii Arena is mostly used for ice hockey. It used to be the home stadium for teams like AIK and Djurgårdens IF. It also hosts many concerts and other sports, like futsal (which is indoor football).
The first international game played there was a friendly match between Hammarby IF (from Sweden) and Jokerit (from Finland). The players were only 12 years old at the time!
The arena used to host the final of Sveriges Television's yearly music show, Melodifestivalen, until 2012. This show picks Sweden's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. The show returned to the arena for some early rounds in 2022. The arena also hosted the main Eurovision Song Contest in 2000 and 2016.
In March 2021, the arena hosted the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships. In November 2021, it held a big video game tournament called Major Stockholm 2021 for the game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
Since 2000, the National Hockey League (NHL) has played some games at the arena. These include both practice games and regular season games. The NHL Global Series returned to Avicii Arena in November 2023. Teams like the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, and Toronto Maple Leafs played games there.

Artwork on the Globe
In 2009, a small cottage made of aluminum was placed on top of the Globe. It was about 12-square-metre (130 sq ft) in size. The artist, Mikael Genberg, wanted to show two important Swedish symbols: the modern Globe building and a traditional, simple countryside cottage. The cottage was painted in a classic red color with white trim. It stayed on the Globe until October 2009.
Skyview
Skyview opened in February 2010. It is a special elevator on the outside of the arena. It takes visitors to the very top of the Globe. From there, you can see amazing views of Stockholm!
Skyview has two round cabins, like gondolas. Each one can hold up to 12 people. They travel up and down on tracks on the outside of the Globe.
