Avicii Arena, also known as Globen (meaning "the Globe"), is a famous indoor stadium in Stockholm, Sweden. It was first called the Stockholm Globe Arena and later the Ericsson Globe.

This arena is special because it represents the Sun in the Sweden Solar System. This is the world's largest model of our Solar System!

About the Arena

Avicii Arena is one of the largest round buildings on Earth. It took two and a half years to build. For a long time, it was the biggest spherical building in the world. Then, the Sphere at The Venetian Resort opened in 2023.

The arena is 110 meters (360 feet) wide. Its inside height is 85 meters (279 feet). The building is huge, with a volume of 605,000 cubic meters (21.4 million cubic feet). It can hold 16,000 people for concerts. For ice hockey games, it can seat 13,850 fans. There are also 40 special VIP boxes and a restaurant inside.

The building is made of steel, concrete, and glass. It was designed by architects Svante Berg and Lars Vretblad.

History of Globen

Globen (5510985669)

Globen opened its doors on February 19, 1989. It was built in less than three years. Some of the first big events held here were the Melodifestivalen (a music competition), the Ice Hockey World Championships, and the Men's European Volleyball Championships.

In 2009, a company called Ericsson bought the rights to the arena's name. So, it became known as the Ericsson Globe.

In 2021, the arena was renamed Avicii Arena. This was done to honor the famous Swedish DJ Avicii, who passed away in 2018. To celebrate the new name, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra played one of Avicii's songs, "For a Better Day." A 14-year-old singer named Ella Tiritiello sang the vocals.

The arena will be updated and modernized in 2024. This is to get ready for the 2025 IIHF World Championship, which Sweden and Denmark will host. After it reopens in 2025, a nearby arena called Hovet will be taken down. That area will become part of a new neighborhood called Soderhov.

Events and Sports

Avicii Arena is often used for ice hockey games. It used to be the home stadium for teams like AIK, Djurgårdens IF, and Hammarby IF. It's also a popular place for music concerts and other sports, like futsal (indoor football).

The first international game played here was a friendly match between young players from Hammarby IF (Sweden) and Jokerit (Finland). The players were only 12 years old!

The arena has hosted the final of Sweden's big music competition, Melodifestivalen, many times. This show picks Sweden's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. The arena also hosted the Eurovision Song Contest itself in 2000 and 2016.

In March 2021, the arena held the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships. In November 2021, it hosted a big video game tournament called PGL Major Stockholm 2021 for the game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Since 2000, the National Hockey League (NHL) has played some of its games here. These include games before the regular season and actual league games. The NHL Global Series will return to Avicii Arena in November 2023. Teams like the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, and Toronto Maple Leafs will play two games each.

In 2009, a small aluminum cottage was placed on top of the Globe. It was 12 square meters (129 square feet) in size. The artist, Mikael Genberg, wanted to show two important Swedish symbols. One was the high-tech Globe building. The other was a simple, traditional Swedish countryside cottage. The cottage stayed on the Globe for a few months.

Skyview Experience

Skyview is a special elevator on the outside of the arena. It takes visitors to the very top of the Globe. From there, you can see amazing views of Stockholm.

It has two round cabins, and each can hold up to 12 people. They travel up and down on tracks on the outside of the building. Skyview opened in February 2010. In its first year, over 160,000 people rode it!
