Sütterlin facts for kids
Sütterlin (also called Sütterlinschrift or Suetterlin script) is a special way of writing by hand that was used in Germany. It's a type of German handwriting.
This script was taught in German schools for many years. Students learned to write in Sütterlin from 1915 until 1941.
What is Sütterlin Script?
Before Sütterlin, the main way Germans wrote by hand was called German Kurrent. Kurrent script used very thin lines and sharp, pointy shapes. Many students in primary school found it quite hard to learn and write neatly.
Because of these difficulties, a German designer and teacher named Ludwig Sütterlin was asked to create a new, simpler script. This happened in 1911.
How Sütterlin is Different
Sütterlin script was designed to be easier to use. It has thicker lines and more rounded shapes compared to the older German Kurrent. This made it much simpler to write with any kind of pen.
Sometimes, people might call any handwritten blackletter script "Sütterlin" in everyday talk, even if it's not exactly the Sütterlin script.
